Trucking: Starting a freight forwarding business, thin margins, domestic freight

Question
Hi Experts,

My fiancee' and I, his nephew and wife would like to know how do we start up a freight forwarding business. My fiancee's niece-in-law works for a freight business and states there is alot of money in this industry. Also, is it the same as import/export. Your respond to this is greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance

Sincerely,
Shannon

Answer
Shannon, are you talking about international or domestic freight forwarding?  These are two very different businesses and have entirely different requirements.  Don't be fooled by "alot of money in this industry"  Both businesses have thin margins and require a substantial amount of cash or credit to pay carriers while you wait for the shippers to pay you.  If you don't pay your carriers promptly they won't come back.  Domestic freight forwarders are rare these days having largely been replaced by brokers and direct carriers.  Either business is complex and still partially regulated so I would advise that you get some experience and education in the field before attempting this.  Best of luck in your endeavors.
Jim.
