Trucking: Hot Shot Start-up, hot shot business, bob stephens

Question
I want to start a hot shot business but I don't want to have to get a CDL.  I want to get a 35-40 ft. gooseneck trailer to go with my dually, but I'm not too sure on what the weights might be and if they will be too much to not have a CDL.  Do you have any recommendations on this, and do you know if there is adequate loads out there for a driver without a CDL who is willing to drive coast to coast?  What kind of insurance would this require?

Answer
Jeff,

Anything over 24,999 lbs. gross (I believe) requires a CDL.  You can get away with hauling freight uner that without a CDL.  See what your truck and a 40' trailer weights and you'll know what weight you can haul legally.  Don't haul anything that will put you in CDL territory!  The DOT will nail you to the wall!  You should be able to keep loaded, though, and profitable.

You'll need liability and cargo insurance.  Get plenty of insurance to cover your rig and high dollar loads if something happens.  Visit www.ooida.com for more help and information.

Good luck!
