RV Repair: Camper Roof Repair, kool seal roof coating, kool seal elastomeric roof coating

Question
We have just bought a 77' Vanguard Camper and it is in desparate need of roof repair above the top bunk.  Looks like a leak that may have turned into rot?  We would like to repair this ourselves.  Any information you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
I am assuming this is an overhead camper, The repairs on that one are not too hard. If you have rotted wood I would remove the paneling inside first so you know exactly where the damage is and how far it has spread, then the external metal and trim so you can remove the insulation and bad wood easily. This way you can use them as a template for your replacement pieces and watch for the wiring harnesses at the same time. If you go slow it is not difficult. Be sure to use flexible sealant on the trim and other external pieces when putting it back together and make sure you have no screws, nails or staples sticking out away from your repairs, that can cause tears and punctures as you go down the road. You can also use a sealant on the roof after the repair if needed. Below is a list of different products. I like the Liquid Roof and it also comes in a kit for damage repairs.

1. Kool Seal Roof Coating
2. Liquid Roof
3. Liquid Rubber
4. RV Roof Coating from Dyco
5. Kool Seal Elastomeric Roof coating
6. ELIXIR RUBBER ROOF COATING
