Trucking: Got a flatdeck trailer need some advice., dot issues, electric brakes

Question
Hi there,

I picked up a flatdeck trailer with the intention of hauling a car around here and there as well as recycling materials and etc.. (its a small but productive town)

The trailer has 2x 6000lb axles with electric brakes and a pintle hitch. It was originally made for bobcats but ive converted it to accept cars and also to be able to service them (centerhole with heavyduty cover, four corner 2000 lb trailer jacks, maybe eventually a little engine hoist from the winch.)

I dont like the pintle, i find it sloppy. I had to buy a big heavy pintle/ball combo for my cherokee (inline 6, large wheels, no lift and for now saggy suspension) and i dont like it at all. I plan on picking up a 3/4 shortly but for now, its what i have.

I also would like to get a car specific trailer eventually as the load distribution as set by the deck on the axles is much better. I think i may have to pull most car in backwards with this one, to keep the engine across or near the axles.

 Any advice on the equipment?

Now legalities. Im registered to operate by my local town and contacted my insurance but have no idea where to start on the DOT issues, if any.

Im in Canada, btw.

Answer
HI ANDREW, I will need to know if you plan to operate in the USA or just in Canada.  Also which providence will you be operating in?
On the equipment, depends on what you will be hauling the most. Should have pulling unit large enough. If you will have heavy loads, need to keep trailer weight light.
I am not familiar with Canadian laws, but can give you phone numbers to c0ntact.  Good Luck,  J P Long
