Trucking: Dump Trucking Business, dump truck business, trucking software

Question
I was interested in starting a dump truck business for my brother and i wanted to know what is the estimated start up cost to open an business of this kind and what procedures do i have to do in order to get started.

Answer
Hi Lovetta.

Start up costs really vary on many variables like credit, location, equipment, etc.  I can't say that it will be X amount of dollars.  What you'll have to do is write up a business plan and go from there.  I can tell you that $10k to $20k is probably conservative.  You will need a truck (or course) with your DOT number, fuel tax card, plates, insurance, etc.  If it's your own company, you should incorporate and get a good trucking software program.

Contact your state's Department of Transportation to help you get started.  Then, write up a business plan.  You need to know where your customers are, what is your projected income, what are your expenses, etc.  This will help get you going on the write track.

Good luck!
