Trucking: truck driving on icy mountain roads, jake brakes, slippery surfaces

Question
I recently moved up from a three ton tractor and gooseneck trailer to a full blown semi.  I have some concerns about driving down icy mountain roads, as any brake will fail if overheated and jake brakes are not recommended on slippery surfaces.  Any advice, or maybe where to look for some?

Answer
use chains if needed, in Colorado, you have to have chains with the tractor between months, drive in the next lower gear and use brakes when needed, use a stabbing motion on downgrades, and on icy terrain, gentle touch will do. use common sense.... if you have a gut feeling, wait it out, the load is not as important as a life.
