Find a truck driving school that is PTDI (Professional Truck Driving Institute) Certified. This guarantees that your getting the best training available. This is, of course, if you want to go to an independent school. Many companies have their own schools and as long as you drive for them for a period of time, the school is reduced or free.
Make a checklist and start investigating companies. Write down pay, average mileage, benefits, equipment, home time, etc. and see which companies stand out for you. I like big companies when starting out because they offer the most and best equipment. A company with a terminal close to you is a big plus in getting you home more often.
If I was in your place, I would look at companies like US Xpress, Werner, TMC and CR England. Those are obviously just a couple, but like I said before, make a list. Miles don't mean anything if your pay is low and vice versa. Companies that offer newer trucks with big sleepers make life on the road a lot easier. Check out sites like www.bubbajunk.com.
