Trucking: Starting a towing company, bob stephens, auto auctions

Question
My husband and i are looking into starting a company.  Basically towing and hauling cars.  This may sound weird but we do not know where to start and would like your opinion.  My husband already drives a truck for a local company.  If you can assist me I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Tomika.

The first thing I would do is write up a business plan.  Know your expenses and how much you need to bring in to turn a profit.  Figure out where your loads will come from, what equipment will you need.  Things like that.
If you need to get a loan, a bank will ask you for your business plan anyway.

The big variable will be finding loads.  Know how your going to keep running.  If you need to hit local auto auctions or repair facilities, do whatever it takes to promote your business.  Too many times I see people who start a company and say "I'm open"!  My response is "so what"?  Don't wait for customers to come to you, go find them.

Once you have that figured out and you buy a truck(s), then contact your state's Department of Transportation to get everything you need to be legal (aside from insurance and plates).

I've answered a lot of questions on car hauling, so feel free to look at some of my previous responses.

Good luck!
