Trucking: Need Advise, vehicular manslaughter, bet bet

Question
Hello,
I obtain my CDL in 2005 and in 2006 I had a truck accident with a fatality. They charged me with vehicular manslaughter. Working for a company at this point is impossible due to this accident. With that all said I don't want to stop my driving career because its something I enjoy doing. For the past 6 months i did my research about being an owner operator and  I'm a thinking about getting my own truck and operating authority because of my situation. Could you advise me of what to to in this situation? Is there any company who would hire me with this on my record? Please reply I need your help.

Answer
You are in a difficult situation.  If you had years of safe driving before this accident you would have a better odds of someone taking a chance.  Most of the larger trucking companies are very focused on their safety ratings with FMCSA because their major customers demand it.  This is true for both company drivers and owner operators.  Your best bet bet is to search out smaller local companies such as small trucking companies, warehouses, and private fleet operators who have an ongoing need for drivers.  Being an owner operator with your own truck may improve the chances of finding something.  Don't overlook local opportunities like bulk hauling / dump truck operations.  It might be good to line something up before buying a truck so you can get the right truck for the job.  That will help you get the most cost effective truck to be able to make a profit.  The real key is to work your way back over the next 3-5 years with zero accidents.  Then you can take that record and move to the next opportunity.  The further in the past this incident the better as long as you don't repeat.  Best of luck.
