Trucking: Newbie, truck driving school, canada northeast

Question
Hi,  I've decided to make a career change and in a few months I'll be attending a truck driving school.  I'm a former Police officer with a totally clean driving record, drug screen and work history.  I understand those are pluses.  However, one concern I have, is being a Newbie, will some companies allow me to drive regional, say Southeastern U.S. (Texas to Florida - Up to About Tennessee and Kentucky)  I don't mind being out for days at a time, but I'd like to stay within a reasonable area if possible and avoid Canada, Northeast and Northwest.

Answer
Hello Don.
First off, Thank you for your service with the force.
Now, Before graduating, you can talk with companies about your desire. many have what they call "regional" or "short haul" which they will only run you in a certain area of the country. (It won't hurt if you took a couple of weeks in a warm season to run the US, just to experience it, If you have a significant other, you can make it into a "Vacation" and get paid for it.) Good Luck. Mike
P.S. Remember, just like the force, common sense will save your life in trucking too!
P.S.S. Go to truckstops and pick up the booklets and look at what they offer.
