Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have had the A/c problem that you have shared. My A/c would cutout
and  would work later. I had a machanic check it out and he thought the
expansion valve was bad or pluged. After a few days my A/C  started working
normal. Then another week and I have a rattle or groulling noise. Mechanics
think it is coming from the compressor. My research suggest the A/C clutch
is probably the noise. The noise is there with A/C on or off. I have 112000
miles. If I pull off the belt can I tell if the clutch has to much play? Do you
think driving it could cause a break down on the road?
Thanks for any input.

ANSWER: Terry, I have seen those things freeze up and burn a belt off.  I wouldnt take a chance.  If you want to drive it and fix the compressor later, I suggest a smaller belt and by-pass the compressor for now.  Ultimately the compressor needs to be replaced.  I have never seen those expansion valves get clogged unless a compressor completely has blown its guts inside.  Roger

QUESTION: Do you think it is possible that it is just the clutch? The clutch seems to be
less work to replace and less money. The cooling works find when the clutch
engages. I also can't find a belt listed for my volvo without A/C. Would I just
need to try to measure the size of belt needed to by pass the compressor?
Thanks

Answer
Terry, yes the clutch is slightly cheaper but getting the compressor will save you money in the long run.  I have seen people pay me to put a clutch on then 6 months later the compressor died.  Measuring the belt may be the only way.  I dont think Volvos come without A/C's anymore unless its special ordered.  Roger
