Trucking: hot shot business, hot shot business, foot gooseneck trailer

Question
QUESTION: I am thinking about getting into the hotshot business and would like to get some information. If I have a one ton and a 40-48 foot gooseneck trailer do I need a permit for every state that I go through? Also I found a company (Frogy freight finders) and they said that they will get me a load and before I have droped it off they will have me another one in the area. Also they say no loads under 1.25 per mile. I called their references and they really liked them. Does this sound right to you? What is your advice on keeping my truck loaded and running.

Thanks so much,

Jeff

ANSWER: Hi Jeff.

Sounds about right.  You will need a permit for every state and there are a lot of brokers out there.  I like to keep 3 or 4 handy to find the best rates.  Don't lock into just one.  More choice is always better.  I go to www.getloaded.com and look for loads when the brokers come up short.  Once you get to know the shippers in your area, deal with them directly and leave out the brokers!

Good luck!

QUESTION: With a one ton and a 40-48 foot flat bed is there enough freight to keep me moving? How hard is it to keep loaded if I was to find a good broker?

Answer
Jeff,

Freight right now, because of the economy, is a little slow.  Is there still freight for you?  Yes, but I don't see freight picking up really good until next year.  However, you can still make a living. Also, don't rely on one broker.  Keep about three or four in your pocket and you'll do fine.  Log into www.getloaded.com and use there "test demo" in finding loads.  You can see some of the loads that are running in your area and where to.

Good luck!
