Trucking: Starting a trucking company, water filtration industry, fictitious business name

I work for a huge company that is in the water filtration industry.  I currently arrange all shipment that leave our warehouse. I have come up with a idea of starting my own trucking business so that i can arrange shipment through my trucking company for the company I currently work with. I deal with common carriers or brokers but mostly common carries for all our shipments.  I currently have a trucking broker that would extend credit to me as long as i made a company of my own. I know that it would be a sole owner business under a fictitious business name.  Would i need any kind of license or more important how can i start this kind of trucking company.

Dear Robert, The question of "Conflict of Interest" comes to mind. You would have to check with a CA Lawyer about that.  To Start a trucking company, You would need Federal Authority, Process Agents, and Federal DOT number, which I could obtain for you (see my web site: www.longdataser.com)
Also you will need Liability Insurance to get the Federal Authority (at least $750,000 limit) Then you must decide if you will operate your own trucks with drivers,etc or use "owner operators" with their own truck to haul the product. Either way, there are certain procedures and records that would have to be maintained. You would have to hire someone to manage the trucking company for you. Hope this helps you.  J P Long,
