Trucking: hauling, worst case scenario, getting past the gatekeeper

Question
I am looking to get hooked up with someone who is trying or already is in the hauling/transport business.  I have an '06 Ford 350 and just want to put it to work.  Do you have an idea of where I can find someone who might be interested in using my truck?

Answer
Hi Stephanie.

There are a couple of options for you.  Most of the web sites and companies that you'll find will deal with over-the-road hot shot trucking.  It sounds to me that your not looking to go head-first into a new trucking career.  The first thing that I would suggest is looking in your local yellow pages for companies that sell trailers.  Then, stop by and see what it would take to deliver those trailers to them from the manufacturer.  Worst case they may tell you that "ABC Trucking does all our hauling".  Well, now you can contact ABC Trucking and see what it takes to work for them.  Usually, though, they'll be happy to talk to you because they want you to beat ABC's price.  Getting past "The Gatekeeper" as I call the boss's secretary, can be difficult, but worth the effort.

You don't have to hit just trailer manufacturers.  Another great source is RV dealerships.  This may require longer trips, but it may prove to be fruitful for you.  Worst case scenario, if dealers are not helping, get brochures and contact the manufacturers direct.  Again, they're always looking for drivers to haul their tow-behind campers to dealers.

The other alternative would be to look in the phone book under "Hot Shot Trucking" and contact those companies.  They may have something that suits your need.  Go to www.superpages.com and type in "Hot Shot Trucking" in the keyword section along with your city.  Do it also for some bigger cities in your region of the US.  They may have a dedicated run in your area.

I know this sounds like a lot of legwork, but not many people are willing to do it.  That's what gets you the ideal position.  I've gotten some great paying loads just by cold calling on local customers.  The same is true for you.  Get on the phone and do some research.  When the company is local, stop by.  I can't stress that enough!  Someone is more likely to help you out face-to-face than on the phone.

If nothing works for you, go to the forums section on Expeditors websites like www.expeditersonline.com.

Good luck!
