Hyundai Repair: 2002 Accent Idle Problem, throttle position sensors, throttle position sensor

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have a 2002 Accent.  When on the road and gas depressed, it runs great.  However, at idle, it's extremely rough and frequently dies.  The check engine light came on, and it gave me the code for TPS / Pedal Pos. Sensor A CKT...
I replaced the TPS with a spare I had around, and it didn't change a thing.
It has a new tune-up, and the timing is spot on.  The compression is great.  But I'm stumped!  Any help / advice?

ANSWER: 2002 Accents had a high incidence of throttle position sensor problems.  Also, the contacts on sensors that have been sitting around tend to get dirty, so this may contribute to your problem.

The primary issue leading to a TPS code is the sensor itself, but I've also seen them when a vacuum leak is present, so you may want to check for vacuum leaks.

Since I don't know the actual code number, I'm reluctant to tell you to replace the sensor.  If you could, follow up with the trouble code.  One of my concerns is that generic trouble code definitions are often misleading.

QUESTION: The code is p0121.
Thanks again!!!

Answer
Definitely make sure there are no vacuum leaks and that the bellows between the throttle body is securely attached and not leaking.

If that's okay and you've cleared this code and it returned with the replacement sensor, replace with a new sensor.  In general, used throttle position sensors are bad news.
