Trucking: dump truck business, question pool, bob stephens

Question
hi was thinking about getting into the dump truck business and i wanted to see if you could answer my question.  I would like to know how do the companies who I lease on to get the work that they suppy me with.  I would like to know do they bid on the jobs.  I have noticed that some of these companies has 70 and 80 of there own trucks and I just want to know how do they find the work.  Because i would like to be involved on a bigger level than just a driver...

Answer
Hi Robert.

I found this your question in the "question pool" here at AllExperts and thought I would help you out.  Many of the bigger dump companies got their start by government contracts.  It may be local or state.  Basically it's when they repair roads, build new ones, build overpasses, etc.  Then they need a small fleet out there at all times.  That's when these dump companies get a call for quite a few trucks.

Once the road work slows down, the trucks get spread out to construction sites.  Nothing that good old fashion sales and an ad in the Yellow pages can't handle.  Hit up a few construction companies in your area and you'll keep busy.  Most guys don't want to go out and sell, but that's what all the big companies do.  Get to know all the "big players" at the local construction companies.  Once you show your dependable, you'll have that fleet in no time.

Good luck!
