Trucking: failed drug test, duty time, outpatient treatment

Question
thank you Mr. Long,
my husband was recently doing an orientation for a large company when his drug test came back positive for THC....need less to say he was not hired....my question is ....is that drug screen reported to DOT, since it was a pre-employment screen, and does he need to follow up with a SAP office to have it cleared.....he has had his CDL for 23 yrs and never failed a screen before.....he has a clean record and we are both very concerned as to what happens next.....Colleen,Upstate NY

Answer
Hello Colleen, Your husband must be evaluated by a SAP - Substance Abuse Professional. He will then be given a report that: 1. Does not need treatment. 2. Needs part-time outpatient treatment, but may continue to drive while being treated on his off duty time   or   3. Needed full-time outpatient or inpatient treatment, has received such treatment, and is ready to return to driving.
He must also pass a return to duty controlled substance test .
This infomation is taken directly from the FMCS Regulations.
Good Luck .  J P Long
