Trucking: Trucking Salaries/ Employability, driveres, minimum salary

Question
I am talking to some schools right now, and they are telling me how high the demand is for truckers. They say that the minimum salary for the first year is about $38,000. What's the catch?

They are also suggesting that I might go into the training end of the business and make even more money, since I have credentials (a MS degree in Chemistry).

What can you tell me about my prospects as a first year driver (in the State of Michigan). Also: I am willing to do whatever it takes to earn the most money possible-- be it regional or local driving.

Answer
There is currently a severe shortage of truck driveres throughout the country.  Although I don't have any specific information about Michigan I am sur a look throgh the classified and job boards will give you an idea of the demand.  $38,000 seem low to me.  Long haul over the road drivers should make in the $50,000 to $60,000 range depending on years of experience and specialties, such as haz mat, doubles, etc.  The "Catch" is that you will spend more time on the road than at home.  The best pay gos to those who are willing to be on the road, living in the cab of the truck, and only getting home every 2 to 4 weeks.  The regular short haul runs that get you home every day or two are more desireable so they go to the drivers with senority, and generally don't pay as well.  It's all a question of what you want, the dollars or the time at home.

There are many more out there.  There are even companies that will pay for your training and getting your CDL if you promise to drive for them.  Just be careful who you are dealing with.
Best of luck.
