Truck Repair: 1987 big cam 350 overhead, cam follower, cam followers

Question
QUESTION: We recently replaced the head gaskets on a 1987 big cam 350 Cummins. The heads were cleaned and valves ground, and I was informed that they were also milled. We replaced all top stop injectors set the valves at .11 and .23 and zero lashed the injectors at 6 inch pounds. The engine now smokes more than it did has a slight miss, increased fuel consumption, and lacks power. After a thorough review of the service manual, I am wondering if we should have bled the lifters down when we ran the rack. Although I do not have the service manual with me at this time I do recall seeing a long special lifter bleeding tool pictured in the manual. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: These engines have cam follower rollers not lifters right?where did you get your injectors from?you might want to start there.without any more info thats the best I can do.

QUESTION: Thank you for your time, and yes it does have cam followers. My mistake. The injectors were rebuilt and pressure tested by Arkansas Fuel Injection. The CPL of this engine is 840, if I am not mistaken. Not sure what other info you need.

Answer
sounds to me like one of your injectors is overfueling. There is also a possibility that one of your valves are not seating in fully to properly seal the combustion chamber. One easy thing you can do is start the truck and get up beside the exhaust tip or muffler.Listen for an unusual "poofing" sound. If you hear it , that's the valve not seating fully. Thanks for the followup.
