Truck Repair: N-14 Cummins in a 1997 peterbuilt with mechanical injectors, drive pulley, timing pointer

Question
Alright,  I have no info on this motor.  No serial/model, nada. Can't find a plate or stamp.  Truck has no power.  Has an 18 sp trans. and a huge rear end  was told that it's a 546(Has its own oil filter!).  Not sure about anything on this truck.

I have rebuilt cat eng's.  Cummins is the same yet sooooo different.   Where do you look for the A,B,C,D for the crank, and what is the firing order and intake/exhaust clearances.

Pushing my luck!!  Torq spec's for valve covers and jakes!!

If you can answer all of this,  I'll keep ya'll typing for months.  Thank you!  Dan

Answer
It is very important to have the engine data info. to have a precise guide towards carrying out various works and adjustment on the Cummins engine.
However, the following info might be of assistance to you regarding your questions.
1. The timing marks A,B,and C are located on the edge of the accessory drive pulley. the same shaft on which the injection pump is mounted.
2. The timing pointer, a small arrow or small bump is either located on the front gear housing cover or clamped on it.
3. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
4. The injector travel setting can be through dial indicator method or zero lash depending on the type of injector you have on the engine. It is very likely that the injector on the N14 may be a form of zero top stop injector requiring a zero lash setting. The sequencE of setting is as follows;
        INJECTOR      VALVE
A           3            5
B           6            3
C           2            6
A           4            2
B           1            4
C           5            3
Note: If A mark aligns with timing pointer, check cylinders 2 and 5 to confirm the one with both intake and exhaust valves closed. If it is No 5, then set injector 3, otherwise you will set injector 4. Once you determine this first step, then follow the firing order. To adjust injector you need to maintain just a lash on the injector rocker arm and this is best done using a 6inch-pound tourque meter.
Valve clearance for Inlet may be either 0.011" or 0.014"
while exhaust may be 0.023" or 0.027 respectively.
5. Torque value for rocker shaft is 70 lb ft
6. Torque value for jakes details can be enquired from Jacobs Manufacturing Co. 22, East Dudley Town Road, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
