Truck Repair: 1992 Chevy 1500 4x4, minimal labour, chevy 1500

Question
QUESTION: I need to change the gears in the front drive axle in my truck. (1992 Chevy 4x4 with the IFS) Where can I find a manual with instructions and information such as torque specs., etc.?

ANSWER: Hi Patrick,
Installing a new gear set is a lot more involved than just a re/re of new parts. the new ring and pinion set have to have a specific contact pattern or they will wear prematurely or whine. This is done by adding and removing shims on the pinion and carrier assembly, also specific pre-load has to be set on the bearings or they will also have a shortened life. I would recommend pulling the axle assembly out, drain the fluids, and take the axle assembly to a trany shop and have them set it up. At least that way if there are issues down the road you have someone to yell at that's not yourself. they should be able to swap the gears and set it up for a couple hundred dollars (or maybe even a flat of beer). It is a pretty simple procedure for an experienced gear tech and it shouldn't take very long so there would be minimal labour charges. A buddy of mine had new gears installed in his mustang and it only cost him $125. Doing it yourself will cause many angry feelings.

Good luck,

Matt

QUESTION: I have been installing / setting up gears in race cars for years, so I know all about setting them up correctly. I just need to know where to find a manual for the Independant Front Suspension for a 1992 Chevy Truck as it is totally different than a traditional differential.

Answer
Hi Patrick,
sorry, I didn't realize you had experience in this field. As far as finding info goes...your guess is as good as mine. my area is heavy duty commercial vehicles. try googling what model your diff is and see what you find.

sorry I couldn't be more help,

Matt
