Truck Repair: tightening seatbelts, chevy truck, strangulation

Why do the seatbelts in a Chevy truck continually tighten up to the point of where you have to unbuckle yourself to avoid strangulation.  WHat good does it do if I unbuckle myself while going down the road?  Is there a way to stop this or fix these seemingly possessed seatbelts??

Hi Tim,
They don't really tighten up. They just hold all the slack you give them, and each time you hit a bump, they just grab some more slack.
One of those stiff little paper clips, clipped on the belt just in front of the shoulder strap slider, will keep the belt from slipping in and getting cought up.

Sounds like a sorry fix, but it is cheap, and it does work.
