Truck Repair: 1996 chevy s-10 4x4 transmission, torque converter, glove compartment

i have a 1996 chevy s-10 4x4.can you tell me what type of trans. it is?it is an automatic.how hard it would be to rebuild it?it wont stay in drive it keeps slipping out and high revving.does it mean the torque converter is just bad or the front pump or what?it would vibrate at about 60 mph.then the net day i couldnt get it above 40 mph in o.d gear.thanks jim t

Hi Jim,
There is a tag in your glove compartment with a bunch of three digit codes. Go to these sites, and compare your codes, and it will tell you what transmission you have, as well as a bunch of other info.

As for the symptoms, it sounds like the clutch is releasing. it is possible that the fluid is low, the filter is plugged, or the "O"ring on the filter is leaking and letting it suck air.
You can't let it slip long before an overhaul is required.
