Truck Repair: 83 Toyota 4x4 oil pressure sending unit, oil pressure sending unit, toyota 4x4

Question
I want to check my oil pressure sending unt to see if it is bad before paying $50 for a new one.  It is hooked up, but the gauge does not register.  Is there a way to determine is the sending unit is bad?

Thank you very much for your time!!

Answer
Hello Jon,
I too would want to check it before buying a new one.
It could be the gauge itself, or one of the wires/connectors, or it could just be the fuse.
Now to answer your question, I am sure there is a way to test the sender. There is also a way to test the gauge.
I have no manual for a Toyota, (although I do own a 4=Runner, and may need one someday), but the public library, in the refference section, has a vast amount of manuals to read, and copies made if needed.
For lack of technical literature, I would connect an ohm meter to the sender and read it, then start the engine and read it.
That would tell if it is reading something, and may indicate the problem is elsewhere, although without a chart, the reading is just good for that.
Now, if there is no change at all, the sender could be bad, but heaven forbid, it may also indicate there is no oil pressure.
Older style gauges you grounded the wire, and the gauge should go to the opposite end of the scale, as when it is disconnected, but I am just not up on the Toyota system.
It would be cool to have both an ohm meter, and a friend with a Toyota like yours that wouldn't mind if you tested his(or hers) for a baseline comparison reading.

Good luck,
Van
