Truck Repair: Sticky # 1 Valve, spring retainer, compression stroke

Question
Suggestions on how to reapair this problem. The rest of the valves on the compression test read 150 - 175.The spring on this valve seems loose. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is my sons truck 1994 GMC pickup. Thanks

Answer
Hi Doreen,
I suspect one of the springs on the valve is broken. I have had it happen.
The spring retainer can be removed, and the springs replaced without removing the head from the engine.
With that cylinder at TDC on its compression stroke, a fitting screwed into the spark plug hole, and attached to an air hose, will hold the valve up with air pressure.
Then with some basic tools, the spring can be compressed, keepers removed, and all replaced, rather easily. It may be a job you might want to farm out to an experienced mechanic, but then again, it would be do-able in the driveway if you are willing to try.
Good luck,
Van
