Truck Repair: Brake system, rear brakes, wheel cylinder

Question
Rusty, I have an 89 Chev. 4-wheel drive pickup I bought new with 97000 miles. I noticed I did not have brakes on the back wheels, I took it to a garage and they replaced the master cylinder, did not work, I took it back, they replaced the controller, still no brakes on the back wheels. What do I do next?
Harold

Answer
Even though it's a little more expensive, you shuold take it to the dealer. after changing a master cylinder and a controller without sucess, it's probablly worth it. the rear system could have something basic wrong with it the non-dealer garage might miss. tell the dealer you want diagnostics and a quote only. then decide if it sounds more sensible than just throwing parts at it. a slow leaking wheel cylinder will let both fluid out and air in taking away the effectivness of the rear brakes and the fluid would have dried up from heat if the leak was slow enough.
Rear abs can be hard to bleed and combined with an adjustment gap could cause your problem. good luck, Rusty
