Truck Repair: rattling noise, dodge dakota sport, dodge dakota

Question
Hi Van,
I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota Sport pickup with 130,000miles on it but a rebuilt engine with only a couple of thousand on it.  Recently it has been making a loud tapping or rattling noise while driving.  I only hear the noise when I am accelerating. When the truck is coasting or not in gear it sounds fine. What could this be? Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,
I have seen the material inside the catalytic converter come loose, and rattle like crazy. Before touching it, though, look in the warranty book under emissions warranty, and see if it is covered.
of course, the converter may not be your rattle, but check it out. Tap on the underside of the converter with your fist when it is cool, and see if you hear the noise.
