Vintage Cars: 1976 VW BUG, crankcase breather, smoke oil

Question
I JUST PURCHASED AND COMPLETELY RESTORED A 76 VW BUG. THE CAR DRIVES AND RUNS GREAT, EXCEPT THERE IS A SMELL OF 'BURNING OIL' AFTER THE ENGINE HAS BEEN TURNED OFF. MY MECHANIC WHO HAS BEEN WORKING ON VWs FOR 50 YEARS HAS LOOKED AND COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE ENGINE THAT WOULD RESULT IN AN 'OIL BURNING' SMELL. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS.

Answer
a tight bearing overheating and burning oil in the engine somewhere? (small/big end, crank, journal.. etc)

:drive the car, stop, pop the boot, look for smoke.. oil could drip from the air intake ( oil coming from crankcase breather) onto the exhaust manifold, check the oil filler for smoke coming from the crankcase.     The mixture could be too weak, in turn overheating the pistons and then burning oil (smoke from crankcase). does the crankcase visibly smoke, or emit oil vapour with burned smell?... Is the oil level too low or the oil grade incorrect? - is part of the engine being starved of oil? (clogged oil-gallery, broken oil pressure relief spring).. it would really help for you to observe the engine AS it is turned off after a drive - look and smell around, it's fairly straightforward. report as much as you can.
