Vintage Cars: 1964 Chevy short bed truck

Question
My father died a few months ago and a neighbor wants to buy Dad's 1964 Chevrolet short bed pickup truck.  The truck was refurbished several years ago, so the paint is good.  However, it's been sitting in the garage for several years.  It won't start, but the neighbor is mechanically inclined and can fix whatever is wrong.  The tires are not good from sitting in one spot so long.  Any idea what we should ask the neighbor to pay?

Answer
Several factors are to be considered. Was the truck seriously restored, or just repainted and cleaned up? Is it a 6 or 8 cylinder engine? Automatic or Manual transmission? Fleetside or Stepside bed?

If the truck is in top notch shape, 8 cylinder, Fleetside w/automatic, then I would think it's probably worth in the $10,000 range. If it's a 6, stepside, manual transmission and only cosmetically refurbished, then it's probably worth $3000-4000.

Remember, it needs new tires and doesn't run as is - that makes a big difference. On top of that, you're selling to a neighbor, and I would think that you would discount the price for a neighbor/friend, especially if your dad and neighbor were close.

Without any pictures and looking at the truck in person, I can really only put some general ideas out there for you to consider. Condition is subjective, and value is REALLY subjective, and often emotional.

I hope this helps, and I hope you are able to come to an amicable agreement with your neighbor.

Good luck.
