Question

Hello Richard:

I question from Valparaiso, Chile which I hope you may help with:

I have a ca.1929 Hupmobile chassis & cowl (originally a phaeton) and plan to build a woodie out of it as I have no bodywork from the windshield back.
I am be very interested in properly identifying the car, can I??

I can mention the following few facts: engine is 6 cyl flathead (looks like a Continental?); wheelbase abt 112"; wheels are 19" steel wires with 6 bolts.
I TRIED to attach some pictures which might help but frankly am not sure if Imanaged to do it. Sorry!

Many thanks!
Lars Sorensen

Answer
Lars,

One picture came through, and it is definitely a Hupmobile 6. As to the year, we might be able to establish that through the serial number tag on the firewall (passenger side). The serial number begins with a letter, which in your case would either be an A (likely) or an S (unlikely). The Model S began in late '29, but had a 114" wheelbase, while the Model A was a 112" wheelbase. Model A manufacture began in early '26, but the '28-'29 radiator and cowl styling was much more refined, and those models are called "Century Six". They are among the most common Hupmobiles, and they were a huge seller. One look at the radiator will tell me whether you're dealing with an early Model A ('26-'27) or a Century. Also, the front bumpers were straight on the '28, and the upper bar was curved on the '29.
