simply trying to locate the fuel pump in a 1978 450 sl

fuel pump is back by the tank by  the left rear wheel area
IF you are looking for Fuel pump relay - could be one of three areas
1  behind glove box
2  above all the other relays under cover - passengers foot well
3  behind/above brake pedal

look for large white red black wire  0015450605 part number
