Vintage Cars: help with W107 450 SL 1978, electric fuel pump, vacuum leaks

Question
Hi Ron, I have a w115 and a few W123 all diesel. I just bought a w107 SL 1978. The car will start right away but I will get steady idle after my forth or fifth attempts. There is no smoke, Engine idle is weak ...if I press the accelerator, it might kill the engine. When if the engine is not warm enough, accelerating might kill it. The car belonged to a couple who moved ...the car was left in a storage for 3 yrs.
I have been told that I should replace the fuel pump. I am sure I should do more than that!
I should review the entire fuel intake / distribution system...I already bought a new electric fuel pump and filters. Same review of the ignition system (spark plugs, distributor... Sam for the vacuum system... A lot to do ...I just need diretions and advices to get started with this new baby.
The air pump seems to be broken (magnet is loose). I am wondering if I can get rid of it or should I keep it?
The engine fan is missing. I adapted another one from my multiple w123...it works but this is temporary. I am thinking replacing the fan with an electric 16" fan.
Once I get the engine reviewed and running smooth, I will start work on the body and interior.
Can you help me get started with a checklist of things to review first?
Thanks for help!
Can you help me with some tips ?

Answer
Louis,
I would first start and make sure there are no vacuum leaks , renew all rubber under the hood.  Clean out old gas, replace all filters. Ensure that the points, plugs are set to spec, then set timing.  Once that is done we can then better diagnose issues.  these cars are vacuum dependent so that is where you start , second - basic tune up , then into injectors and fuel rail pressures. Good luck
