Vintage Cars: pontiac g8 gt, pontiac g8, genration

Question
I am thinking about buying a new pontiac g8 gt I was told that this is not the first generation for this car. I was told it has been made for 40 years in another country but I can't find any support of that online. So my question is, "is this really the first genration of this car?

Answer
I know more about European cars than American. However, I have repair manuals for US cars going back to the 30's and that designation was never used in the US.  I do know that GM has brought this car over
from Australia but do not know how long it has been made there.
