Vintage Cars: 1983 500sl, dot releases, wheel wells

Question
QUESTION: Hi,  I am to test drive a 1983 500sl in a few days which is offered for $4000.  I haven't seen the car, but was told that it runs well but has "rust around the wheel wells."  I am intending to use this is a daily driver and am not that knowlegible about cars.  Is the fact that it has rust a big problem or is it a quick fix?  What should I watch out for during the test drive?  I thank you in advance for your expertise and help.  Cheers!

ANSWER: check the link below, the 500SL was not produced in 83.  83Sl's are good ones to avoid because of single row timing chain ( unless fixed)

On all mercedes - a good service history is a must.  If there is obvious rust , look for  the hidden - in trunk, under carpets and liners

Ah, I assume you are in the US. Is it a Euro model? Grey market?  there was only 11,000 or so made for 8 years or so. The dilemma is many of the cars were crudely converted, with importers performing the bare minimum to obtain the essential EPA/DOT “releases” that allowed the car to be registered in the US, so chech this out.
I rarely see these so make sure its not rebadged.  and yes , look for rust, if the body is in good shape and she runs reasonably well, Offer less , see what happens - good luck.

QUESTION: Thanks for your previous response.  I did not have a chance to drive the car yet but received some pictures which I have attached.  In one the jack port is rusted through.  What is your expert advice?  Thank you for your help and expertise!

Answer
that is a tough spot to fix, the jack point is integrated into the frame as these cars are "unibody"  with that rust Showing , I would ask to get it up on a lift to take a close look at the undercarriage.
Good luck, the car looks nice, I love the euro headlights, wish mine had them, I am in quest to find some!
