Vintage Cars: 1975 560 sl, rubber hoses, interior seats

Question
QUESTION: I'm looking at a 1975 560 sl to purchase.  Car has not been started in 4 years.  Body in great shape (no rust or dents).  Interior (Seats)need replacing.

1.  Am I asking for trouble buying this car?
2.  How can I determine a fair price?

Thanks

ANSWER: Well it cannot be a 75 560SL, they were only made from 86-89
A car well maintained frm those years can demand up to 12K, one that is not running but body sound 3-5K.  Trouble - depends - service history is a MUST when you buy old MB's , without them it is a bet at best.. LEt me know how I can help

QUESTION: Hey Ron,

Pertaining to the pervious question:

Vin # 10704412023361 (off door post)
Mfg Date:  11/74     (off door post)
Badge on trunk says 560 SL
battery is in the trunk
Is there a major difference I should look for between the 350 - 450- 560

What am I looking at?

Chuck

Answer
so it is a 75, but someone has rebadged it with the 560 emblem
the main difference is the engine size, very little else is different.  Let me do a little work on your VIN and I will get back to you
Ron

OK here is something to look at , Mercedes seldom made mistakes but in 75 they put the newly required catalytic converors in the engine bay resulting in many problems - they basically cooked the rubber hoses and caused all sorts of issues as well as occasional fires!
Most that survived had them moved downstream to prevent this. If they are still in the engine bay they WILL be an issue. Also the HP was reduced to 180 HP.  I am not sure if it is a 350 or 450 , but the 75 did have issues.  Take a look and tell me what you find.  Also there should be an engine plate on the rail in front of the radiator , see if you can get those numbers
Oh and SL = convertible
