Vintage Cars: intake swap, set ups, donor car


Question
QUESTION: hello....I have a 1976 450SL and am replacing the engine. The donor car is a 1974 450SLC. The injection system is different on the 74. Can I swap the intake from my 76 onto the 74 engine? This will make things much simpler.

ANSWER: if you mean take a Kjet manifold intake to a Djet system ,  I believe the  answer would be no unless you are willing to change out all of the electronics and ECU.  I am not sure the injector diameter is the same

QUESTION: which is the better system?  and if I used the Djet system as is....how difficult is it to connect to my existing wiring setup....thanks

ANSWER: depends on who you ask, both have their advantages, the Djet in my opinion is a simpler system.  The ECU wiring and ECU will have to go with the Djet, they are not compatible, beyond that most of the wiring is the same. A big factor will be the fuel pressure, the Djet ( I believe) needs more rail pressure than the K jet system. I know they have different fuel delivery ( pumps) systems. You would have to look at the vacuum set ups, they may be different and since these old D and K jet systems are vacuum dependant you would want to make sure they match.

All in all I believe you are looking at a significant project, are you planning on doing this yourself?

QUESTION: no....my mechanic is doing most of the work....I'm just helping out.
What would you then suggest would be my best option and way to get the donor engine to work for me?

if you are sure the donor engine is good, I would take all of it to the car, including the ECU. I would also suggest you join this forum

If it has been done these guys have done it , they are great
vacuum sytem would have to be sorted out, I will check on that,
I will tell you agian that this job is not for the faint of heart!
