Vintage Cars: 64 Impala, motor vehicle department, vin search

Question
I have recently bought a 64 Impala for a fixer upper project. The guy i bought the car form said he did not have a title for it but the license tag was left on the car from the previous owner. There are cowl tags on the vehicle and I do have a bill of sale. How can i get a title for the vehicle and a VIN?

Answer
You need to check with the motor-vehicle department for the state in which you purchased the car.  Here in NY, we didn't even have titles until 1973; until then, your vehicle registration stub served as proof of ownership.  Fortunately, all 50 states now have websites for motor-vehicle information.  As for the VIN, search the web for sites like "classic Chevy forums," and post your question there.  Experts on '62-'66 full-size Chevys will be able to tell you exactly where the VIN tag is locate on the vehicle.
