Vintage Cars: cold start, adjustment screws, small screws

Question
Tazz
My 64 Pontiac 230 6 cyl. is hard to start cold.
This morning I had to prime the carb.
It has a new fuel pump and a reconditioned carb(or so I was told).
It also needs a warm up period before it stops 'burping'.
The rest of the day it starts fine and runs smooth.
Can you suggest anything?
There are only two adjustment screws on the car,one the idle and one I assume the choke.
The idle is good, should I open the choke more?
Thanks.

Answer
First thing is to check that the choke is working, this is easy, take off the air cleaner, and look into the carb as you open the throttle with your hand.  The chock flap should close the carb off.  If it doesn't, fix it, or replace it with a manual choke.

If it has an automatic choke, there should be a black plastic cover over the metal body.  There will be three small screws that hold that cover on.  Turning it one way makes the flap close sooner, the other way makes it close later.  Get a service manual for your car and it will give you all the info you need.  You can find these on E-bay or at Hemmings.com.

Also, I would not take the word of the previous owner that the carb had been rebuilt.  Take it off and do it yourself.  these are super simple carbs and the kits take you step by step through the process.  Clean it with carb cleaner and don't lose any parts!  You will get a lot of pleasure from fixing this yourself if you haven't done one before.
