Vintage Cars: 62 tempest powerglide transaxle, wheels tires, suspension travel

Question
What would cause the half shafts to pop out going over bumps or through dips? Is trans junk or can this be fixed?
The owner says that the springs are weak and that the shafts pop back in ok. He has wood blocks wedged in to prevent suspension travel to sell car. It seems to drive ok in parking lot?????.

Answer
I am not an expert on the rear transaxle of early Tempests, but I do know that when things wear, they move around.  If the springs and other things are that worn, then they are letting the wheels/tires bend out too much, and that is probably why the half shafts pop out.

It it hasn't happened a lot, the shafts and transmission differential they go into may not be worn, but you have to assume that you will need to rebuild most if not all of the rear suspension and maybe put in new half shafts and a new differential.

Chances are the rest of the tranny is fine if it drives OK at low speed.
