Vintage Cars: Pontiac, pontiac laurentian, yadda yadda

Question
Hi Don
Getting back to the 64 Pontiac Laurentian 4 door 230 standard.
It is 75% roadworthy.
My intention is to have everything working, the interior patched up and the exterior looking OK.
There is a small oil leak,a cracked windshileld (not bad),but I might just leave these.
Inother words,not a mint restore.
What would it be worth?
I am getting a few inquiries as to what would I sell it for?
I have seen the same vehicle as parts cars listed for a thousand, and they look like crap.
I paid 500 for it,put about two thousand worth of parts and labour(I got a qualified mechanic to do the work so I spent a bit).
I dont want to undersell it,but dont want to overprice it if I get a serious offer.
You hear stories about people selling stuff that they though werent worth that much for crazy amounts of money on Ebay-maybe they will pay the money because Dad had one....yadda yadda.
I realise its a tough call cause you cant see the car,but can you give it a shot?

Answer
Barry,

All I can do is make a wild guess.  Remember that four door sedans are at the bottom of the pool for collector cars.  Also, you have the small engine, and it needs quite a bit of work.  A "road worthy" car is always worth something, but to be honest, don't even think about the values that they are getting at Barret-Jackson or some of the wild stuff on E-bay.

Also, parts and labor and almost always impossible to get back when selling a car.  So even though you have more than $2500 in the car right now, it probably isn't worth that much.

here are the questions to ask yourself, and if you answer them to me, I still can't make a much better evaluation, but just think about this:

Is there rust visible?  how much?  ARe the holes in the floor pan/trunk?  If you patch up the interior will it LOOK patched, or are you putting in OEM quality and look?  Remember that custom interiors are not a good thing for most cars unless they are a total custom car.  Is the paint nice, or thin, blotchy etc?  Is it mechanically perfect, or just able to move on its own?

A car that is not rusty, with everything working, no dents and decent paint (not show quality but nice enough that you don't have to be making excuses) with a clean interior that looks good and isn't all patched up could be worth $5000 maybe more.

If the car is rough and still needs a lot of work and is rusty, then despite the money you have put into it it could be worth less than $1000.

I wish I could be more specific, but without seeing it, it is really impossible for anyone to give a good estimate.

Buy a copy of Old CAr Price Guide, and if they don't list the Canadian Pontiacs, look to American Pontiac pricing, or chey pricing.  Read the descriptions of the evaluation criteria.  Be honest with yourself about the car.

You can figure it out pretty close.
