How to Get a Notarized Bill of Sale

If you live in a state that requires a notarized bill of sale when buying or selling a vehicle, or if you simply want the peace of mind that a notary can provide with the transaction, you will need to know how to go about getting it done.

What You Will Need

  • A computer with an Internet connection
  • A bill of sale to be notarized
  • Local phone directory (optional)

Step 1 - Find a Bill of Sale Form or Template

Look online to find bill of sale forms or templates that you can use when selling your vehicle. You can enter terms like "bill of sale template" or "sample bill of sale form" into the text box of a major search engine to find links that have the form you need.

Step 2 - Find a Notary Public

Search in your local phone directory under the heading "Notary Public," or visit sites like the Online Yellow Pages to find someone who can provide notary services for you and the buyer.

Step 3 - Visit the Notary Public

Schedule an appointment (may not be necessary) and visit the Notary Public together with the other party to the car sale transaction.

Step 4 - Sign the Bill of Sale

The Notary Public will ask you for identification to ensure that the parties listed on the bill of sale are indeed the people that will sign the document. Once the Notary accepts your identification, he or she will ask you and the other party to sign the bill of sale in their presence. The Notary Public will then complete the document by certifying its authenticity and stamping the document with a Notary Seal.

Step 5 - Pay Notary Fee

A Notary Public is required by law to charge a fee for providing Notary services and may not provide them for free (helps to discourage cheating). The Notary Public may also ask you to sign a register. Sign the journal and pay the required Notary fee. That's it. You now have a notarized bill of sale.
