How to sell a Car On Craigslist Without Getting Scammed

Craigslist is a great way to sell items, but it is also a great way for scammers to find you.

  • DESCRIPTION
Describe your car or whatever you are selling. Be specific and add as many pictures as you can. State you won't answer any emails.

  • PHONE NUMBER
Remember to put your phone number in the add and insist that they contact you directly to set up an appointment to view the car.

  • EMAILS
Refuse to answer emails. In my experience over 90% of the people emailing me about my listing were not legitimate. They want you to email them back so they can email you directly. Once they have your email the will send you spam mail or try and make a shady deal with you.

  • PERSONAL TOUCH
Only accept payment in person and in cash. Don't accept money orders from any source especially the mail. Most people who want you to take a money order are scammers the money order will look real your bank will accept it, but about a week later you learn it is fake.

  • DON'T SHIP
Please don't offer to ship your vehicle anywhere. IT IS A SCAM. Who really needs an old car shipped to Africa or anywhere for that matter.
The vehicle must be picked up in person.

  • BILL OF SALE
Every sale needs to include a Bill of Sale. This will protect in case anything goes wrong with the vehicle later. You can find a free bill of sale online, or you can make your own.
