How to Ship Car Wheels

Car wheels are heavy and may cost a lot to ship. If you really need to send a specific set of wheels, then UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service will be able to ship them, as long as you prepare the packages according to postal regulations.

Things You'll Need

  • One large, heavy-duty box for each wheel
  • Cushioning material, such as Styrofoam or bubble wrap
  • Packing Tape
  • Scale
  • Wrap each wheel in bubble wrap or pack each tire in styrofoam.

  • Fill each box 1/4 full with foam peanuts. Purchase foam peanuts at any office supply store.

  • Place each wheel in its own box.

  • Fill the remainder of each box with more foam peanuts.

  • Close each box and gently shake it to make sure you have enough cushioning, and to make sure the box is sturdy enough to contain the wheel. If you hear any shifting in the box, add more foam peanuts and repeat this step until there is no more shifting.

  • Seal your boxes with 2 inch wide packing tape.

  • Gently shake and turn each box to make sure the tape is strong enough to contain the wheels. If it is not, then apply more tape.

  • Using a permanent marker, taped-on paper or adhesive stickers, cover any markings which were previously on your packing boxes.

  • Write the legal address of your recipient on each box.

  • Write your legal return address on each box.

  • Take your packages to your local UPS, FedEx or U.S. Post Office to have them shipped.
