I've been in the Land Rover LR3 and Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged trucks, but never the classic Range Rover. I was excited, as I've always found the Range to be attractive inside and out. Leaving the office on a Friday evening, I drove though one of the worst storms I've seen in my life. Flash-flooding and flipped up sewer-covers were among the obstacles facing the Range Rover, and it handled everything like a champ. This ute is a jack-of-all-trades; I drove it through water up to the sills, the supercharger provides loads of power, and, to top it off, it looks classy and elegant. The interior is delightfully laid out—if a little bit busy—with big, appropriate-looking dials and switches. The $95,000 is pretty steep, but this thing does it all.

I know this is the flagship, and it has the presence, the interior room, and the power to prove it. It has no shortage of technology and gadgetry. But without the chance to off-road (Detroit potholes do not quality), I couldn't get over the guilty feeling that, were I a customer, I'd be paying for a premium vehicle I would have little use for. I'd rather step down to the more practically sized LR3, or my true passion, the Range Rover Sport.
