Trouble Filling the Gas Tank in a 2006 Ford Escape

When emission laws were established a lot of new automotive problems arose. One of them is a slow filling gasoline tank. What should be a quick-and-easy job turns into an annoyance. The reason this happens is the tank venting system is not working properly. All of the gas vapors must be trapped in an activated charcoal canister, then drawn through electrically operated valves by the engine when it is running. The complex canister valving also automatically opens to allow fueling.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Flashlight
  • 3/8 socket set
  • Screwdriver set
  • Jack the rear of the vehicle up. Install jack stands under the frame. Near the main gas filler hose, underneath the vehicle is a black canister. Inspect the vapor hoses that are attached to the canister. Make sure they have not collapsed or become damaged. Check the electrical connections and make sure they are secure and tight.

  • Inspect the charcoal canister purge valve. If this valve does not operate, the vapor canister will become saturated with gasoline. Inspect the canister vent valve and hose. If it does not operate, the tank will not relieve pressure for fueling. These circuits are complex and controlled by the engine computer. Refer to the service manual for repair procedures.

  • Partially remove the back carpet in the hatch area. Underneath is an access cover to the fuel pump assembly and the top of the fuel tank. Remove this cover. Inspect the vapor hose connected to the tank. If it has collapsed or is damaged it will need repair.
