How to Replace a Corvette Car Key

Chevrolet has produced six generations of Corvettes since the first one rolled off the assembly line in 1953. The car has evolved in every facet over the years, including theft protection. The first generation used a basic key that provided a limited amount of protection. The fourth-generation key incorporated a resistor that signaled to the on-board computer if the key fob was correct. The remote sensing key was also offered in the fourth generation and continues into the 2011 production year.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle identification number
  • Pen and paper
  • Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the dash or inside the driver's door, depending on the model. Record the VIN on a piece of paper.

  • Locate a Chevrolet dealer with a parts department (see Resources).

  • Visit the Chevrolet parts department with the VIN, and the old key if possible.

  • Provide the VIN and request one or more copies of the key. Many Corvette models use a different key for the door locks and ignition; the dealer can inform you if this is the case for your Corvette.

  • Test the operation of each key.
