How to Fix a Toyota Celica Speedometer

Like any automobile, the Toyota Celica uses a speedometer to translate the movement of the wheels into an accurate reading of the car's speed that can be communicated to the driver through the instrument panel. When your speedometer no longer works, you no longer have an accurate reading of how fast you are going which could be very dangerous and end up costing you hundreds of dollars in speeding tickets. To fix this problem it is necessary to remove the old one and replace it with a working unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Crescent wrench
  • Open the hood of the Celica and remove the negative (black) battery cable from the battery with a 10 mm wrench.

  • Use a screwdriver to remove the six screws around the inside of the Celica's instrument panel. Once you have removed these you can gently pull out the center console to gain access to the speedometer.

  • Disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer by using a crescent wrench to remove the nut that is connecting it to the back of the speedometer.

  • Disconnect the wiring from the back of the speedometer by pushing the tabs on the wiring harnesses to release them.

  • Remove the light on the back of the speedometer by gently twisting it until it comes out.

  • Remove the old speedometer from the instrument panel and discard it.

  • Place the new speedometer into the instrument panel and adjust it so that it sits correctly inside of the instrument panel with the numbers centered.

  • Place the light into the new speedometer and twist it to secure it into place.

  • Reconnect the wiring and reattach the speedometer cable using a crescent wrench and the nut you removed.

  • Slide the instrument panel back into the dashboard and screw it back into place with a screwdriver and the screws you removed in step two.

  • Reattach the negative (black) battery cable to the Celica's battery and secure it into place with a wrench.
