Installing Lower Control Arms in a Hyundai

The lower control arms on a Hyundai bolt onto the steering knuckle of the car, and help keep the front suspension aligned. These help to support the weight of the front end, but also guide the suspension up and down in the fender well. These lower control arms have bushings and bearings, both of which can wear down over time. If these do wear down, then the lower control arm won't function correctly, the car will go out of alignment, and if left unchecked, you could get into an accident. Installing a replacement lower control arm takes an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Replacement lower control arms
  • Lift the front of the Hyundai with the jack. Put jack stands underneath the vehicle's chassis. Take off the front wheels with the lug wrench.

  • Unbolt the sway bar from the lower control arm with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then unbolt the lower control arm from the mounts on the inside of the chassis using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Pull the lower control arm out of the front suspension.

  • Lift the replacement lower control arm into the chassis and bolt it in place with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Lift the other end into the steering knuckle and bolt it to the steering knuckle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Bolt the sway bar to the lower control arm with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the front wheels with the lug wrench, then lower the vehicle to the ground with the jack.
