How to Remove a Steering Column

When buying a used car, you may not get all the options you want. A tilt steering column is option that isn't often available, which is a matter of convenience and safety. Swapping out the steering column for a different model seems difficult, but it can be done in a garage with simple hand tools and about an hour of time. This project is on a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 5-speed.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • 1/4-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Replacement steering column
  • Unbolt the dashboard trim panel at the bottom of the dash underneath the steering column using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket set.

  • Unbolt the metal trim panel around the outside of the column using the 1/4-inch ratchet. This is a black, metal panel that will reveal the rest of the column.

  • Unbolt the bottom of the steering column using the 3/8-inch ratchet. This is a sleeve attachment that goes through the firewall and is a slip joint, so once it's unbolted, it can be pulled back.

  • Unclip the electrical connections from the steering column to the dashboard using your hands.

  • Unbolt the steering column underneath the dash using the 3/8-inch ratchet and sockets. The column will drop down at this point and can be removed at this point.

  • Reinstall the new column in the reverse order of removal.
