How to Program a Remote Starter With a New Remote

A remote starter enables you to turn on your car from a distance using a remote typically placed on your key chain. The remote uses a specific code to activate the car starter --- providing security against others accidentally starting the car's engine. You must program a new remote if you plan to replace a malfunctioning or misplaced original. The procedure requires an adjustment that does not involve dismantling or removing the car starter.

  • Insert the car key into the ignition slot, but do not take the car out of "Park" or release the emergency brake.

  • Turn the car key clockwise until you hear a click. Press once on the "Valet" button on the car starter remote you plan to use with your car --- the "Valet" button is typically a small button found at the bottom of the remote.

  • Press the "Lock" or padlock icon button on the car starter remote, along with the "Valet" button, within three seconds of having released the "Valet" button.

  • Release both buttons after three seconds have passed. Turn the car key counter clockwise so it returns to its first position. Remove the car key from the ignition slot.
